Ten of us went to Tula's last night (1/31/14) for dinner and a concert by the Stephanie Porter Quartet. What a great show! The band members are incredibly talented local jazz musicians. Stephanie Porter has a phenomenal voice and stage presence. I used to do a lot of sound mixing and was mighty impressed by how Stephanie projected her voice to maximum effect with perfect microphone positioning. Truly an enjoyable music and dining experience. We will be returning here again. Especially when the Stephanie Porter Quartet is performing. They give their all for the audience. Can't ask for more than that.

It was a pleasure meeting you and hearing you sing for the first time last night at Dawsons. What a gift you have! I now have a new favorite singer. I hope you can find on you tube Nancy Wilson's rendition of "You Can Have Him" off her "Broadway My Way" album. There is also a live version of her singing it at Lake Tahoe in 1982, but the album version features some really great guitar work by Joe Pass if I'm not mistaken. Again, thanks for a great night. I'm a fan.

Saw Stephanie with the SRJO band last weekend at Kirkland Performance Center. It was the Jazz4Kids matinee with a house filled with fidgety youngsters, but she gave it the full treatment. I'm really glad to have been there with my kid - thanks for the great show!

Hello Stephanie,
My dear lady friend, Annie Reed, suggested that I take a listen to some of your tracks. You are amazing. I purchased your latest CD, but was wondering where can I get my hands on your first CD, Mood Swings? I'm in the NYC area and prefer the actual disc rather than MP3 downloads. Thanks and keep putting out the music!

Hi Stephanie,

Was just listening to your recording on Pearl Django's Metropolitan Swing album. I love that recording.

Don't know if you remember me, I used to happily dance to you in the days of John Holte's band, lived over in Wallingford and saw you a couple of times at the light store.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello and I look forward to your album which is on eMusic.

Review: Stephanie Porter was born to sing Jazz. That much is evident from the opening of "Love For Sale" an excellent cut from her album "How Deep Is The Ocean?" Porter's vocals on the track are stunning as is the offbeat drumming. The song has a very open sound, at times just her voice and drums, though acoustic bass and piano are also utilized.

Porter can sing like no tomorrow to be blunt. She has stunning depth and range and never overdoes it or overstays her welcome. Her smoky vocals on "Love Me Or Leave Me" are haunting and totally geared for the song. It's quite easy to picture a 1930's Jazz Club covered in cigarette smoke with a bunch of gentlemen hoping to be lonely no more. I think I also picture Jessica Rabbit.

"How Deep Is The Ocean?" has a bit of swing and swagger to it with excellent piano and acoustic bass work even including a bass solo. Again, Porter's vocals are great and the musical arrangements are first class. It is truly a pleasure to listen to a nod to the distant past of American music that sounds genuine and sincere. And, what a voice to do it with. Truly outstanding.
